Bell Tower (Campanile)

The bell tower, or campanile, is situated in the southeast corner of the Co-Cathedral block.  It houses a carillon of twenty-three bells which were cast in the Netherlands.  The four large bells are named after women from the first religious communities established in the diocese: St. Angela Merici (Ursulines), Mother Pauline Gannon (Dominicans), Mother Jeanne de Matel (Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word) and Mother Henriette Delille (Sisters of the Holy Family).  Like the great bells which call people to worship, these pioneer women religious called the People of God to faith and service.  The bell tower is topped with a seventeen-foot tall gold-leafed cross, one of three total adorning the Co-Cathedral.
