Altar
The altar, measuring
eight feet by six feet and weighing over six
tons, is carved of rare Ethiopian marble, a rich
blood red natural stone symbolic of the love
poured out of Jesus' sacred heart for all
humanity. Jesus offered himself on Calvary
and was raised from the dead. This saving
event becomes present on the altar in each
Eucharistic celebration at which we are
nourished by Jesus' Body and Blood. Thus,
the altar is consecrated and treated with
reverence. Supporting the mensa, the top
of the altar, are twelve columns representing
the twelve covenantal tribes of Israel and their
successors, the twelve apostles. Set in
the base of the altar is the reliquary. In
the Church's history and tradition, the altar
was often placed over the tombs of saints of the
relics of saints were deposited beneath the
altar.
