Events and Schedule of WYD

World Youth Day is certainly more than a single day, but a whole series of activities that culminate in a papal mass on Sunday.  Official events are spread throughout the city of Sydney and its surroundings, beginning on Tuesday, July 15.

Even before these activities, many dioceses across Australia and many religious communities will be holding events for pilgrims coming from around the world to help prepare them for the coming events.

Tuesday

George Cardinal Pell, Archbishop of Sydney, will officially open WYD with a Mass.

Tuesday through Friday

There will be Youth Festival Events at a variety of locations.

Wednesday through Friday

Bishops from around the world will lead catechetical sessions in a variety of languages at over 250 locations around Sydney.  This is an opportunity for young Catholics to learn more about their faith from the official teachers in the Church, the bishops.

Thursday

His Holiness, Pope Benedict XVI, will arrive in the city and be welcomed by the young people and the city.

Friday

WYD will feature a living Way of the Cross that will begin at the Cathedral and move to the famous Sydney Opera House.

Saturday

The participants will walk as pilgrims across the Sydney Harbor Bridge to Randwick racecourse.  There the pilgrims will hold vigil with the Pope through the night.

Sunday

The events close with a final Mass presided over by the Pope.

Many pilgrims will not return to their homes immediately.  Rather, inspired by the events and their encounter with the Risen Christ they will seek to put their faith in action through service projects, both locally and internationally.
